How The Scholarship Works

The St. Dominic Savio Scholarship

The scholarship is administered by the Missionaries of Jesus, an order of religious sisters that lives and works in Matamoros, Mexico and Brownsville, Texas.  The Sisters work all year round in the poor communities of Matamoros.

The Sisters identify the families that are in need of help to send their teens to school and have teens that have the ambition to complete their education and are successful academically.

Once the scholarship recipients have been identified, the Sisters determine how much each of these families is able to contribute themselves.  The remaining cost is provided by the scholarship.  This allows the scholarship to be stretched out as much as possible to help the greatest number of families.

The Sisters use this money to help pay for tuition, purchase books and supplies, and with the purchase of the schools uniforms, if necessary.  All purchases and payments of the tuition are done by the Sisters themselves.

At the end of every academic year, the Sisters provide us with a packet with information on each scholarship recipient.  The packet includes:  reciepts for all purchases and payments made for the student using the scholarship, the students grades for that year, a picture of the student, information about the student and their family, and a letter of appreciation from the scholarship recipient.
